The Argonauts, reigning champions of the WRL Wheelchair Invitational League, confirmed that they will finish in the top two of this years competition, after two wins at their home arena in Dartford on Saturday.
They travel to Wrexham in early September to face North Wales Crusaders and Crusaders Celts, and will seal top spot if they beat the former.
It was a family affair in East London last Saturday – husbands and wives, fathers, sons and daughters, brothers, sisters and even an uncle and nephew taking part in the same side.
Argonauts beat both Cardiff Blue Dragons and Torfaen Tigers on Saturday with 16-year old Ellie Cockerton the star of the day, scoring seven tries in their game against Cardiff, and six tries and three goals against Torfaen. She now heads the league’s top try scorers list with 30.
James Hazel went over for four tries against Cardiff in their 76-24 win. Richard Carver and Keiron Hammond, who kicked three goals, each scored a brace of tries. Peter Johnston got a try and three goals.
Brother and sister combination Lee and Libble Sargent each got two tries for Cardiff with Lee also landing a goal. Patrick Martin added a try and Nathan Hudson a conversion.
In game two, Cardiff Blue Dragons secured their first-ever win in Wheelchair Rugby League with a 76-16 mauling of Torfaen Tigers.
Lee Sargent scored seven tries and kicked a goal with Libbie adding a try. Their dad Paul Sargent scored a try and goal, as did captain Daniel Martin. Father and son combination Stuart and Marley Bellamy each scored a try, Pete Lauder scored two tries and a goal. Nathan Hudson landed three goals.
Cardiff’s other try came from Sian Morris-Parker, whilst her husband Mathew Morris-Parker landed a goal for Torfaen. Alex Powell scored a try and goal for the Tigers with Mila-Rose Nathaniel scoring a try on her debut, joining her older sister Poppy Cayton who also scored.
Argonauts beat Torfaen 68-20 in the final game. Joining Cockerton on the scoresheet was Hazel, who scored three tries and two goals, Hammond, who got two of each, Scott Cooper who scored one of each and Carver with a try.
Tigers’ replies all came in the second half. Tomos Parker, Mat and Sian’s nephew, scored two tries, his first scores in the league, Powell landed a try and goal, whilst 12-year old Alys Golden scored her first-ever points as she converted her own try.
The next matches are on August 24 in Wrexham when Crusaders Celts host Torfaen Tigers and Hereford Harriers.
