Summary:

With their now being 33 professional teams, a preliminary round was added in the previous season for the Challenge Cup. Only one preliminary round match was played, and it was Wigan and Cardiff who drew the short straw in this season. It wasn’t ideal for Wigan who having played in the John Player Final the weekend before were now three games behind most of their title rivals. Wigan got the job done against mid table second division Cardiff but the loss of Graeme West with a broken jaw was a big blow.

Half Time: Wigan 7 Cardiff 2
