The 1895 Cup kicked off last weekend with North Wales Crusaders cruising to their second big win in successive weeks, this time winning 60-0 at Newcastle Thunder. Welsh-qualified Paddy Jones was in the Crusaders side with George Birch playing for Thunder. Elsewhere in the competition, which only had three games in this, the preliminary round, Sam Bowring made his first appearance of the season for Midlands Hurricanes who swept aside Whitehaven, whilst at Rochdale Hornets, Brad Llewellyn, Harry Boots and Jamie Jenkins were in the defeated Cornwall side.
In the postponed Challenge Cup second round tie from the previous weekend, York Knights were 72-12 winners at Billy Walkley‘s Keighley Cougars.
A number of pre-season friendlies also took place through the weekend with Caleb Aekins in action for Featherstone Rovers, plus former Wales Wheelchair international Harry Jones was second official in Widnes Vikings wheelchair pre-season clash against Bradford Bulls.
