The big game of the day came in the RFL Championship where Whitehaven achieved an 18-10 win at Dewsbury Rams, despite travelling with the just the one sub, who was our own Will Evans. Dewsbury, with Curtis Davies in the side, were relegated as a result of the loss. That puts Whitehaven onto the same number of points as Halifax Panthers, who are both hoping not to join Dewsbury in the drop zone. Halifax went down at home to Wakefield Trinity, who are guaranteed top spot at the end of the season. Connor Davies was in the Panthers side. Widnes Vikings continued their charge for the play-offs with a home win over Sheffield Eagles. All three of our players in the Vikings side, Rhodri Lloyd, Mike Butt and Matty Fozard, each scored a try. Rhys Williams‘ Swinton side are still battling relegation. He scored a try at Barrow Raiders, but the Lions went down 20-18. Elliot Kear‘s Batley Bulldogs lost at York Knights.
Oldham cemented their League 1 title win with a 72-0 hammering of Cornwall. Craig Kopczak came off the bench to score a try. Jake Lloyd was in the Cornwall side. Keighley Cougars, already sure of second place in the final League 1 table, beat Hunslet at home. The away side, for whom Jude Ferreira scored his 16th try of the season, slip to fourth as a result. Billy Walkley scored two tries for the Cougars, putting him on 19 for the season. North Wales Crusaders lost away to Midlands Hurricanes, with Ben Evans in the Crusaders team.
Harry Hayes scored his first ever NRL try on Friday, helping Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs to a healthy away win at New Zealand Warriors.
And in the WRL Wheelchair Invitational League, Scott Trigg-Turner of Torfaen Tigers came up against Lucie Roberts and Martin Turner of Crusaders Celts, and beat them in Wrexham. Turner and Trigg-Turner both got onto the score sheet. A full report here.
