South Wales Scorpions held the second annual Scorpions Primary Schools Cup last Sunday in association with Wales Rugby League and IntroSport / IntroTeach which was won by Narberth Primary School who beat holders Parc-y-Tywyn School from Burry Port near Llanelli 3 tries to 1.
The tournament, contested by eight schools from the breadth of South Wales, was held before the South Wales Scorpions v Keighley Cougars match in Caerphilly.
The games were played with seven players per side with each side having to field at least one girl in each game. The teams were split up into two groups with the top two qualifying for the semi-finals.
Over 1,000 children took part in the two-month long tournament which saw seven regional festivals take place.
The semi-finals, that took place immediately before the Final at Virginia Park, saw Narberth beat Pontnewydd (Cwmbran) by 5 tries to 2 and Parc-y-Tywyn beating Y Bedol (Ammanford) 2 tries to 1.
All four schools then made a guard of honour for the Scorpions and Keighley sides when they ran onto the pitch.
Other schools to compete came from Ffiarfach (Tregib), Hawthorn (Cardiff), Llangewydd (Bridgend) and Lon Las (Swansea).
Players of the tournament were Llew Jones from Narberth and Lucy Parker from Y Bedol.
Wales Rugby League Development Officer Mark Jones said: “For the second year in a row, we were really pleased at the success of this tournament and long may it continue. We’d like to thank all of our volunteers from the Scorpions and Wales Rugby League, and to Caerphilly RFC for all their help in staging the games, especially those from the club who came early to go on the gate as it was a long day for them.”
The next event is the Scorpions Schools to Club Cup at under 13 level on Sunday 24th July at The Gnoll before the Scorpions v Doncaster match. Again this is the second year that the competition has been in held. In 2010, Cyfarthfa School from Merthyr Tydfil beat Maesydderwen School from Ystradgynlais in the final.
