Welsh success in the latest Challenge Cup games

There were Welsh international players in all four games in the fifth round of the Challenge Cup as Ian Golden reports. Pic: Mark Stringer.

Gavin Bennion and Rhys Williams scored the Swinton Lions’ tries in their tie against Sheffield Eagles, shown live on BBC Sport, but couldn’t prevent a close 14-12 loss.

Elliot Kear‘s Batley Bulldogs will be playing in the last 16. They had a hard-fought 18-14 win at Widnes Vikings for whom Rhodri Lloyd was their star player. Matty Fozard was also in the Vikings’ side.

Caleb Aekins will also be potentially lining up against a Super League side, depending on tonight’s draw. His Featherstone Rovers side dramatically edged out Wakefield Trinity in golden point extra-time in a game shown live on “The Sportsman”, and in the last of the Cup games, Halifax Panthers made easy work of dispatching York Acorn, who were the last community side left in the competition. Connor Davies starred for the Panthers.

Watch the draw for the sixth round of the Cup on BBC Sportsday from 6:30pm tonight (Monday).

In Super League, it really was a game of two halves at Leigh Leopards, where Leeds Rhinos, for whom Luis Roberts again starred, came back from 16-0 down at the break to win 22-16. In the NRL, Bradman Best‘s Newcastle Knights fell to an opening day defeat at Canberra Raiders.

In the Wheelchair game, Jodie Boyd-Ward was in action in a pre-season friendly for Leeds when they took on Sheffield.
