We were sad to learn of the passing of former Wales Dragonhearts international heritage #81 Jamie Robbins, who died last Wednesday (20th August) aged 46.
Jamie played for Cardiff Demons, alongside players like Gethin Jenkins and Gareth Dean, in the RFL U21 Academy League, which operated from 1997-2000. He was selected for Wales Dragonhearts against Scotland A in August 2000 in Glasgow, with Wales winning 20-10.
From 2001, he concentrated on rugby union. He was already a Wales Youth RU international when he was 16, coming through the Merthyr RFC system. He played senior rugby union for Merthyr, Hirwaun, Dowlais and Cefn Coed, helping the latter to gain promotion in 2016.
Peter Gooding, who played alongside him at Wales Dragonhearts and coached him at Cardiff Demons in 2000, said: “I only coached him for one season, but he was always full of energy and passion on and off the pitch. He played the game with a huge smile and will be missed by all who knew him.”
Everyone at WRL sends their sincere condolences to all of his family and friends. A tribute will be paid to him at the first Wales Dragonhearts match of the season in a few weeks time.
Jamie Robbins – 31/12/1978-20/08/2025
