Summer Smash is tomorrow, Saturday 14th June, at Cardiff Arms Park.
It’s four full rugby league matches including two of Wales’ international sides, plus two JES Group Rugby League Conference fixtures.
The teams for each match will be released throughout today, so please check the links to see who is playing.
Who is playing?
Game 1 – Cynon Valley Cavaliers v Bridgend Blue Bulls – kick-off 11am
Both sides come into this Conference game on the back of defeats last week. Bridgend went down 42-14 at home to South Wales Jets, whilst the Cavaliers, also playing at home, lost a thriller 36-34 to Rhondda Outlaws. With only two sides qualifying for the play-offs in this five-team league, every result counts and this is going to be an exciting game from the start.
Game 2 – Rhondda Outlaws v Wales Students – kick-off 1pm
With the Outlaws the odd team in five this week, they take on Wales Students in an important third and final warm-up match for the latter. In just over a fortnight, Clive Griffiths’ side will be in the Student Four Nations in Nottingham and this is his final chance to see who is in and who is out as he names his squad next week.
Game 3 – South Wales Jets v Aberavon Fighting Irish – kick-off 3pm
To say this is the “big one” is no understatement. The Fighting Irish edged out the Jets in last season’s Grand Final by just three points, and then beat them again, 34-24, in the opening game of this season. However, the Jets were vastly understrength in that game and recovered last week with more of a full side at Bridgend. For Aberavon, this is just game two and will be surely favourites for a Grand Final place if they win.
Game 4 – Wales Masters v Ireland Masters – kick-off 5pm
Wales Masters, who named their squad for this match last month, are our representative side for our over 35s in Wales. Masters is strictly a social version of the sport and the rules are slightly modified to cater for the older players. There are no champions and no cup finals, Masters is about is all about the spirit of the game. If you want to get involved, Cardiff Blue Dragons and North Wales Buccaneers are our clubs.
There will also be junior rugby league matches from our U8 and U9 clubs throughout the day.
