Torfaen remain top of the Wheelchair League

Torfaen Tigers remain top of the WRL Wheelchair Invitational League after beating Cardiff Blue Dragons 48-10 in Cwmbran on Sunday.

The home side, who played the whole game with the same five players, were dominant for most of the encounter with Jamie Reynolds going over for their first try on three minutes before Scott Trigg-Turner leapt on a grubber to double the lead, with Reynolds converting.

Leighton Morris was sent over in the corner for the third try on 19 minutes. Then Trigg-Turner went in under the sticks for the fourth, with Reynolds adding a second goal.

Cardiff finally got over on 27 minutes when Thomas James scored a hard-fought try in the corner.

But Torfaen hit back straight away. Morris got his second, after Jason Reynolds, father of Jamie, retrieved the ball from kick-off, to put the half-time score on 24-4.

There was only a minute gone on the clock in the second half when Jamie Reynolds got his second try, adding his third goal.

Cardiff put on the pressure more in the next ten minutes and were finally rewarded when Libbie Sargent scored in the corner.

However, Torfaen finished the game on top after Trigg-Turner, Jamie Reynolds and Morris all completed their hat-tricks with Jamie Reynolds, landing three more goals. A Daniel Martin penalty goal, scored before Tigers’ final try, was the only other score that the capital side were able to register.

Torfaen will take on North Wales Crusaders next week, with both sides going into the clash unbeaten, after the Crusaders beat Swindon St George 42-12 in game two of the day.

Swindon open the scoring with a Wesley Newman try on just two minutes, the first time they’ve led in a WRL Wheelchair League match.

It took until the 14 minutes for Crusaders to register a score, but when they did, Martin Turner went over for a hat-trick of tries in the space of six minutes, the first improved by Wyatt Jones. A Fionn McCabe try just before the interval put the half-time score onto 18-4.

Harry Jones got the next Crusaders try, scoring in the first set after kick-off. That was his 1,000th career point, his first points were also against Swindon, scored 12 years ago. Martin Turner converted Jones’ try before scoring his fourth try of the game. Daniel Jones added the next try for Crusaders with Turner converting to put the score onto 34-4.

The teams then traded tries for the remainder of the game with Samuel Ellis getting two for Swindon and Jess Booth two for Crusaders.
