Gwylio’r Cymry – Welsh stars continue to shine

Denive Balmforth helped Catalans Dragons to a good home win over Castleford Tigers in the men’s Super League. Charlie Glover and Fin Yates played for Salford Red Devils in their defeat at Leigh Leopards, the latter failing an HIA. After a few games of being 18th man, Luke Thomas made it onto the bench for Warrington Wolves, but they lost at Huddersfield Giants.

Warrington’s academy side fared better at Huddersfield, with Isaac Holdsworth scoring a try in their win. Junior Westwood was also in the Warrington side. Elsewhere, Sam Dickenson helped Wigan Warriors academy to a win over Wakefield Trinity, who fielded Dan Hetherington. Sam Grice helped Castleford Tigers to a win over Hull FC, whilst Oliver Garmston did likewise for St Helens against Bradford Bulls. In the NRL, Sam Hughes and Harry Hayes were in the Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs side that lost at Melbourne Storm.

Mike Butt scored a try for Widnes Vikings as they secured an outstanding 30-14 win at Caleb Aekins‘ Featherstone Rovers to help their play-off charge in the RFL Championship. Matty Fozard was also in the Widnes side. Bailey Antrobus was again in action for league leaders York Knights as they secured a valuable away win at third-placed Toulouse Olympique XIII. London Broncos, who fielded Huw Worthington, Curtis Davies and Matt Ross, suffered a 20-18 home defeat to fourth-placed Oldham. Elliot Kear was back in the Batley Bulldogs side after a few games out, and he helped them to a healthy 40-6 away win at Hunslet.

With just a couple of weeks left in the regular season, North Wales Crusaders could seal the League 1 title next week if they beat Keighley Cougars at home. Last weekend, the Crusaders easily saw off Goole Vikings, with Paddy Jones and Ben Evans in the side. Keighley won away at Midlands Hurricanes, who had Luis Roberts taken off for a head injury. Newcastle Thunder are still without a win this season, but last weekend was their narrowest loss of the season, with George Birch in their side in their 28-10 defeat to Whitehaven.

In the Women’s Super League, there was yet another hat-trick of tries for Dani McGifford as St Helens cruised to a home win against Barrow Raiders. Gracie Hobbs helped Huddersfield Giants to a home win against Warrington Wolves, but there was defeat for Carys Marsh‘s Wigan Warriors at York Valkyrie.

Finally, in the WRL Wheelchair Invitational League, there were a number of Welsh internationals involved in both games, which saw Torfaen Tigers beat Swindon St George and North Wales Crusaders beat Cardiff Blue Dragons.
