Year 7 Girls Champion Schools Final – Ysgol Gyfun Gymraeg Plasmawr 28 Castleford Academy 10

Ysgol Gyfun Gymraeg Plasmawr Year 7 Girls dominated the second half to storm to a 28-10 win over Castleford Academy to become just the second Welsh school to win a Girls’ Champion Schools final.

This completes a perfect season for the school side, after being unbeaten in the group stages and having won all Welsh rugby union titles too.

Liliy Le-Sauteur intercepted and ran well, but was stopped short of the line. But a couple of plays later, Anest Jones dived over for the opening try on seven minutes. Le-Sauteur couldn’t convert, but Plawmawr were 4-0 up.

But Castleford soon hit back as a storming run from Freya Till levelled the scores, and she was unable to convert her own try.

Plasmawr went back into the lead thanks to a 90-metre sprint by Halle Goren, during which no one could catch her, and she grounded under the sticks. Le-Sauteur added the extras to put the score on to 10-4 at half-time.

Player of the match Amelia Hughes grounded from short range to extend Plasmawr’s lead three minutes into the second half. Le-Sauteur converted again to put the score up to 16-4.

The tries kept coming. Le-Sauteur made another good run from her own half to score underneath the sticks. She converted her own try to open a three-try cushion.

It was another long run and another individual try that came next. This one from Hughes for her second try that she placed under the posts, making the kick easy for Le-Sauteur to put the score on to 28-4.

Ruby Pye got a consolation try back for Castleford, which was converted, but it was too little too late as Plasmawr celebrated.
