Aberavon Fighting Irish completed the double over Rhondda Outlaws, winning 46-22 to extended their winning streak to five out of five this season.
They started the match well with two tries from Cody Rees and one from Conor O’Callaghan, with Sean Waldeck adding one goal for a 14-0 lead.
Outlaws got on the board on 21 minutes thanks to 40-year old Mark Jones, who was captained by his 19-year old son Calum Jones in this match. Lloyd Miller converted the try.
Aberavon soon extended their advantage to 26-6 thanks to tries from Ioan Evans and a hat-trick clincher for Rees, both converted by Sean Weldeck.
Two tries in five minutes for the Outlaws made the score at half-time competitive at 26-16, Thomas Fry and Jamie Leech going over, with Miller converting the first.
But Aberavon weren’t going to let this game slip. Aaron Cookson, Jack Blunsdown, O’Callagan and Drew Kinsey all went over in the second half with Evans converting the final two. Miller’s try and goal for Outlaws midway through the half was mere consolation.
Bridgend Blue Bulls overcame Cynon Valley Cavaliers 38-14 to pull four points ahead of South Wales Jets in second place.
Their match against the Jets in Ammanford next week as part of Jets Fest will be crucial to their Grand Final hopes.
Cavaliers were 8-0 up early on through tries from Brad Toy and Harvey Williams, but Bridgend went into half-time 10-8 ahead thanks to tries from Chadd George and Jake Whitfield, the latter converted by Corey Harris.
Bridgend open the second half with an early unconverted try from Charlie Stoddart. This was soon followed up by George’s second of the match, plus a further try from Juris Kesans and two more from Whitfield. Harris added a further four goals. Faafouina Loau scored Cavaliers’ lone second half try, that Toy converted.
