Cardiff Demons just three games from Super League

Cardiff Demons are just three wins away from a place in the 2025 Women’s Super League, with the first of these at home against London Broncos on Saturday at the Cardiff University Sports Park in Llanrumney (kick-off 2pm).

This game is the Women’s Championship South Grand Final, with the winners going on to play the northern champions at Midlands Hurricanes’ ground in Birmingham on Sunday 29th September, with the winners of that game facing this year’s Super League bottom side Featherstone Rovers, a team that Demons beat in last year’s Challenge Cup, seven days later.

The Championship South was competed by four sides this year, but from the start, it was always a two-horse race with the two capital clubs dominating proceedings, both only losing one game, to each other.

Cardiff and London have met in the last two Women’s South Grand Finals, with the Welsh winning in 2022 and the English taking revenge last year. In fact the head-to-head shows that in the seven games played between the two sides, Cardiff do have a slight edge, winning four of the encounters. Those three matches are the only games that Cardiff Demons have ever lost against southern opposition.

But this is the first time that this encounter has been a step towards promotion to the big time and Demons’ coach Ian Newbury is looking forward to to it.

“Like any final this is a massive moment for the club,” he said. “While we have had an outstanding season, ultimately the success we will be measured on comes down to this one game.

“There is another carrot on this game this year with the national final and then the potential of a Super League promotion play off. The ambition is for the Demons to be competing at the top level, which we have shown that we can.

“It’s an important step in the development of the game in the south and in Wales’ push towards the World Cup campaign.”

Admission to the match on Saturday is just £3 for all.
