It was a happy St David’s Day for rugby league in the Caerphilly County Borough when not one but two new rugby league sides launched today.
In Ystrad Mynach, South Wales Jets launched their U14 girls side, whilst at Caerphilly Leisure Centre, it was the first ever training session for the new Aber Valley Wolves Wheelchair side.
The Jets welcomed 30 girls, with the promise of more to come, to their first ever U14 girls session.
Held by newly appointed Jets coaches, the Cardiff Demons and Wales internationals Amberley Ruck and Ffion Jenkins, the phenomenal turnout showed the appetite for girls rugby league is very much alive and kicking.
Jenkins said: “It was a really good day, and to have a turn out of over 30 girls was incredible. To see the growth of the game in Wales and to see these girls enjoying rugby league and to give them the opportunity and pathway to pursue rugby league is amazing.”
The Aber Valley Wolves Wheelchair session was every bit as enjoyable. They have appointed Paul Sargent from Cardiff Blue Dragons and Mathew Morris-Parker, who has been with Torfaen Tigers for the last few years, as their head coaches.
With 11 players in attendance, which included newcomers as well as players from Cardiff and Torfaen who came to assist, the Wolves were delighted with the session.
Morris-Parker said: “It’s great to see so many people come here, new and old. It’s always great at these sort of events to bring the community together and introduce people to the sport as well. We’re an inclusive sport, anyone can play, disabled or non-disabled and we’d love more people in Caerphilly to give it a go. If you love rugby and either you can’t play running rugby or want to try a new version, please come along.”
