In one of the most entertaining of Welsh performances, our U19 side showed some great skills to earn a 58-28 win over a battling Scotland side.
Rhys Hughes went over for an early opening try for Wales. Charlie Newton converted.
Scotland hit back after Oscar Elliott-McCulloch pounced on a loose ball for an unconverted try, but Wales soon regained control, as quick tries from Jacob Morris, Joshua Gabrielson, Jacob Jones and Oscar Jones, all improved by Newton, put the score on to 30-4 on 23 minutes.
A good run from Harry Woodard got a try back for Scotland ten minutes later.
But Wales soon restored the balance. A lovely hand-off from Ioan Herbert gifted Ethan Williams a try. Newton couldn’t convert but Wales were 34-8 up at half-time.
Wales opened the second half with an outstanding opening try. Newton did well to pass under pressure, setting up Ollie Rees to score, with Newton converting.
Scotland again went over early themselves. Jacon Walker scored in the corner. They followed that up quickly when Finley Cannon skipped through for a fourth Scottish try. Shaun Callan converted well to put the score back to 40-18.
Some more neat footwork increased Wales’ lead just before the hour. Harley Smith received from Ethan Williams, and he was outstanding in twisted through the Scots. Newton converted.
And after Scotland were temporarily reduced to 12, Wales quickly made use of the extra player and Josh Harding ran over to bring up the half century. Newton easily converted again.
Scotland weren’t finished yet. Charlie Jackson beat off his markers to score, with Callan adding the extras.
But Wales soon addressed the balance when Will Mathers went in under the sticks and Newton converted.
The Scots pressed hard for another and were eventually rewarded through the mercurial Cannon who did well to score the final try of the game that went unconverted.
