WRL welcome Matthew Porch as Non-Executive Director for Finance

Wales Rugby League is pleased to announce the appointment of Matthew Porch as its new Non-Executive Director (Finance), effective from 25 October 2025.

Matthew brings a strong background in finance, governance, and strategic planning, with experience across both the public and private sectors. ACCA and AAT qualified, his career began as an accounting apprentice, where he gained hands-on experience while completing his professional studies. This journey shaped his strong attention to detail, commitment to financial integrity, and belief in continuous learning.

As his career progressed, Matthew moved into senior finance roles with responsibility for large budgets, financial performance, and risk management. He has worked closely with leadership teams to support long-term planning and sound governance, skills that align closely with his role on the Wales Rugby League Board.

Matthew has also worked within professional sport, including time at Bath Rugby, where he supported both commercial and performance departments. This experience gave him valuable insight into the financial and operational challenges faced by elite and grassroots sport, and how strong financial management can support sustainable success and community impact.

Speaking about his appointment, Matthew said:
“My focus is on ensuring the organisation’s finances are managed sustainably, allowing all areas of the game to achieve their goals while remaining financially secure. Over the next few years, I want to help support the growth of rugby league across Wales and contribute to building a strong, long-term professional structure for the sport.”

In the short to medium term, Matthew will prioritise financial sustainability, preparing Wales’ Women’s and Wheelchair teams for the 2026 World Cup, and continuing to strengthen the skills and diversity of the Board.

Outside of work, Matthew is a keen sports fan and fitness enthusiast, supporting Castleford Tigers, Bristol City, and Bath Rugby, and regularly taking part in local running events.

Wales Rugby League looks forward to working with Matthew as he supports the organisation’s strategic aims and the continued growth of the sport in Wales.
