Wales Rugby League would like to congratulate Jonathan Davies for being made a Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) in the New Year Honours.
The 63-year-old Wales and Great Britain international has been recognised for services to people with cancer and for broadcasting.
“It means a lot and I am very privileged and honoured to accept it,” said the former player, who was a part of the iconic 1995 European Championship winning side and captained Wales to the semi finals of the World Cup.
Davies, originally from Trimsaran, Carmarthenshire, has been broadcasting for 28 years in the league and union codes. He played union for Neath, Llanelli and Wales before finding success professionally with Widnes and Warrington as well as turning out with the Cowboys and Bulldogs in Australia.
Wales Rugby League chairman James Davies said: “On behalf of Wales Rugby League, we would like to congratulate Jonathan on receiving the recognition he so richly deserves. A true legend on the field in both codes, his impact on the game is undeniable — but his legacy extends far beyond sport.
“Cancer is something that touches us all, and every one of us has been impacted in some way by a loved one, friend, or colleague who has faced the disease. Jonathan’s commitment to giving back to our communities, and his unwavering support for those in their hour of need, truly sets him apart.
“Through his involvement with charities such as Velindre, helping to raise over £50 million, he has shown the depth of his character and compassion.
This award is a fitting tribute not only to his sporting achievements, but to the person he is off the field.”
