Aberavon to begin title defence with Grand Final rematch

Champions Aberavon Fighting Irish will begin the defence of their JES Group Rugby League Conference crown against South Wales Jets – the team they defeated in the 2024 Grand Final.

The fixtures have been announced for what will be the 23rd season of the WRL South Wales men’s league and the opening week sees the last two winners of the title do battle at Harlequins Field, Port Talbot on Saturday 10th May (2.30pm).

Also on opening day, the losing semi-finalists in last year’s league face each other, with Cynon Valley Cavaliers hosting Pyle-RFC based Bridgend Blue Bulls at Welfare Ground, Hirwaun.

In other matches that day, Rhondda Outlaws welcome Gilfach Goch-based South Wales Saints in Glyncoch, whilst Cardiff Blue Dragons, who return to the league after a year out, entertain West Wales Jets at Dragons Nest Diamond Ground, Whitchurch.

West Wales Jets, who will be based at Manor Road, Ammanford, are a sister club of South Wales Jets, who remain at Penallta RFC.

Once again, the eight sides in the league will play eight matches, facing each other once with one loop fixture.

The top four sides will then qualify for the semi-finals with the Grand Final being played at The Lextan Gnoll in Neath on Saturday 2nd August.
