Big boost for the girls game at Jets Fest this Saturday

This Saturday sees a momentous occasion for girls’ rugby league in Wales, as two Welsh girls’ club sides come up against each other for the first time.

And it’s been confirmed that at “Jets Fest” at Penallta RFC, there will be not one, but two matches between girls’ club sides from Wales, plus a match against a visiting girls’ side from England, meaning that five girls’ sides, up to 100 players, from Wales will play at one ground in a day, a record for rugby league in Wales.

Opening Jets Fest at 9.30am, South Wales Jets take on Aber Valley Wolves in an U12 girls match at 9.30am.

Then, later in the day at 3.15pm, there’s an U13 girls match between South Wales Jets and Swansea Rams.

Also, South Wales Jets U14 girls, who were recently undefeated at a London RL girls’ festival, take on Culcheth Eagles from the north of England at 1.30pm.

With Wales Women competing in the World Cup this year, there’s never been a better opportunity to grow the girls’ game in Wales, as Robert Coles, head of girls’ rugby league at South Wales Jets, emphasises.

“We’ve had a great response from girls wanting to play rugby league,” he said. “We have around 70 girls signed on to the club right now, and that’s massive for the future of the female game in Wales, as we need to continue to grow the game after the World Cup. Other clubs like Swansea Rams and Aber Valley Wolves are also building, so hopefully we’ll have girls leagues in 2027.”

Jets Fest was created last year, when around 400 players took part in the day, and organisers are expecting even more this year, with 21 matches already scheduled to take place over ten hours on three pitches.

All the boys’ junior sides from South Wales Jets will be taking part in the day, primarily facing their respective opposition sides from West Wales Jets.

The day then concludes when the South Wales Jets’ men’s side play their latest fixture in the JES Rugby League Conference, taking on Rhondda Outlaws (kick-off 5.30pm).
