Cymru Sport radio to cover Wheelchair RL matches in Wales

Wales Rugby League are delighted to announce that three of the final five Wheelchair Rugby League dates will be covered by  live radio online by Cymru Sport.

The WRL Wheelchair Development League continues on Sunday 5th October at The Fitzone, University of South Wales in Treforest with the big local derby clash between Cardiff Blue Dragons and Torfaen Tigers (kick-off noon), followed by Swindon St George v North Wales Crusaders (1.20pm).

If Torfaen Tigers avoid defeat, they will qualify for both the WRL League’s Grand Final and the Cwpan Sialens Cadair Olwyn, which sees the top two Welsh sides play off. Defeat for Swindon on 5th October will mean that both of these finals will be contesting by the same two teams for the first time.

The final regular season matches at Cwmbran Stadium on Sunday 19th October will also be covered by Cymru Sport, as well as the Cwpan Sialens Cadair Olwyn on Saturday 1st November at Caerphilly Leisure Centre.

Matthew Rowley from Cymru Sport said: “We’re delighted to be able to cover five of the Wheelchair Rugby League matches in South Wales in October and November.

“With Wales qualifying for next year’s Wheelchair Rugby League World Cup, it’s good for us to be able to commentate on some of the potential players for the tournament.

“This continues our coverage of rugby league after covering Wales men in last year’s World Cup qualifiers, and we look forward to covering more rugby league in the near future.”

It’s the first time that there’s been any full live coverage of a domestic Wales Rugby League organised competition, and Stephen Jones, the head of Wheelchair Rugby League in Wales, is delighted that this coverage has been secured for the wheelchair competition.

He said: “It’s absolutely fantastic that Cymru Sport are going to be covering some of our matches live.

“With the addition of more clubs in Wales for next year, our sport is going from strength to strength. When you factor in this coverage, it will open wheelchair rugby league up to a wider audience.

“This is the type of coverage we have been missing in previous years. Now we will see our sport on the main stage and fingers crossed, introduce the sport to the next generation of players who will in turn help the national team in years to come.”

Cymru Sport is an internet-based radio service, designed to fill the gap for live sport commentary in the regions of Wales. Cymru Sport allows regional broadcasters to link up on a common platform to offer commentary at games and sports across Wales.

Links to the commentary feeds will be posted on https://cymrusport.cymru/ when live.
