Gwylio’r Cymry – Hereford one step closer to the title

Harry Jones and Ian Golden report on last weekend’s matches featuring Welsh internationals and hopefuls.

Hereford Harriers put one hand on the RFL Wheelchair Championship West League Leaders Shield with a 40-16 win at Warrington Wolves. Internationals, Alan Caron and Lee Sargent both featured and scored, whilst Libbie Sargent also played as they came back from being 16-14 down at the break. Elsewhere, North Wales Crusaders slipped in their pursuit for play-offs as they fell 42-40 against Rochdale Hornets with internationals Martin Turner and Jakub Wasieczko both featuring.

In the Wheelchair Super League, Jodie Boyd-Ward‘s Leeds Rhinos side bounced back from their surprise defeat last week as they claimed a 98-0 victory over Hull FC. She scored a brace of tries before being taken off the field and taken to hospital following a big knock to her knee. Wigan Warriors suffered two away defeats to London Roosters with Scott Trigg-Turner in their Super League side, and Brogan Evans and Mark Williams playing for their reserves.

In the men’s Super League, Danive Balmforth played in Catalans Dragons’ loss at Huddersfield Giants, whilst Charlie Glover and Fin Yates were both in Salford Red Devils’ side as they lost at Hull FC. In the Super League Academy, Junior Westwood ran in a try for Warrington Wolves as they beat Sam Dickenson‘s Wigan Warriors. Isaac Holdsworth was also in the Warrington side. Sam Grice played for Castleford Tigers in their academy draw at Hull Kingston Rovers. Oliver Garmston was in the St Helens side that won at Dan Hetherington‘s Wakefield Trinity. Finally, Charlie Newton‘s Huddersfield Giants overcame Lewis Owens‘ Bradford Bulls. In the NRL, Harry Hayes and Sam Hughes helped Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs.

Widnes Vikings, who are applying to join Super League next season, had a 30-10 Championship win at home to Batley Bulldogs. Mike Butt, Matty Fozard and Gavin Bennion were in the Widnes side. Oldham, starring Gil Dudson, had a good home win against Barrow Raiders, and Connor Davies helped Halifax Panthers to a home win over Billy Walkley‘s Sheffield Eagles. Meanwhile, Connor’s twin brother Curtis Davies alongside Huw Worthington played for London Broncos as they lost at home to Toulouse Olympique XIII.

In League 1, Rochdale Hornets put the pressure on North Wales Crusaders at the top of the table as they beat them 20-16. Anthony Walker and Paddy Jones were in the Crusaders side. Midlands Hurricanes, with Luis Roberts scoring a try, lost away at Whitehaven. Dec Tomlinson‘s Dewsbury Rams lost at home to Workington Town. Bailey Antrobus was in the Newcastle Thunder side that lost at Keighley Cougars.
