South Wales Jets won the WRL Men’s Nines tournament at their own new home in Penallta RFC after an 18-4 win over Cynon Valley Cavaliers in the final.

Five sides competed throughout the day, which was blessed with good weather throughout, bar a few drops of rain which was on the very edge of a storm. A cricket match in the Rhondda valleys, just over the mountain, was rained off due to a waterlogged pitch, but thankfully we saw none of that.

It was the same two sides who opened the tournament, with Jets running out 22-8 winners on that occasion.

They remained unbeaten throughout the day, with former professional Marcus Webb the star for the Jets, running in some excellent quality tries and winning player of the tournament as a result.

Cynon Valley also had their stars, especially young Wales U19 squad member Jacob Morris, who was awarded the Most Promising Player award.

A depleted Cardiff University side went winless, so dropped out before the semi-finals, that saw Cynon Valley beat Swansea University 11-10 and Jets beat Rhondda Outlaws 14-8.

It was a successful start to the WRL men’s season and the Jets, last year’s 13-a-side champions, could again be a force if they can keep up the form in this truncated version of the game.
