Montgomeryshire Marauders kick-off with defeat

Prestatyn Panthers 56-24 Montgomeryshire Marauders
By Barry Williams

In another big development for the game in North Wales, Montgomeryshire Marauders took part in their first open Age fixture against Prestatyn, and put on an encouraging display which bodes well for the future.

It was the more experienced Panthers outfit who took the lead, scoring three early tries before the Marauders pulled back a score through Scrum-half Alwyn Williams, with his conversion putting the score at 16-6.

Prestatyn scored again, before hooker Barry Williams forced his way over from close range. A further score from Alwyn Williams brought the Marauders back into contention, but Prestatyn scored three tries in quick succession to put a victory all but beyond the Marauders.

Despite this, the visitors did not allow their heads to drop, with Alwyn Williams completing his hat-trick, and Jack Brady seizing on a loose pass to cross under the posts.

Despite this comeback, the Marauders, playing a man down after an injury to prop Ben Astley, were unable to maintain their pressure, and Prestatyn were able to cross for a further three tries to put the result beyond any doubt.
