West Wales win historic first U18 Origin clash

West Wales have beaten East Wales in 38-10 in the first ever under 18s Origin match.

The match was played at the Caerphilly Centre of Sporting Excellence in Ystrad Mynach in front of a large vocal crowd on a cold Sunday evening.

West Wales, who were 16-0 up at half-time thanks to two tries from Harley Smith and one from Jacob Morris. Kyson Rees converted twice.

Smith scored twice more in the second half, with Luke Ingram and Alex Green also adding tries. Rees took his goal tally up to five.

Iestyn Blake and Evan Rowlands crossed for East Wales, with Finlay Walker kicking a goal. 

Scott O’Kelly, head coach of West Wales was delighted with his side’s performance.

“It was great to be involved in this first of hopefully many U18 origin test matches,” he said.

“The commitment shown by both sides was fantastic in what was a full-blooded encounter.

“I was especially happy with the team putting into practice what we have worked on in training, especially with the limited number of sessions we have had.

“It was a great advert for the game and should provide a platform to build pathways within Wales at this level.

“I’d like to thank all the players coaches and background staff from both teams for their efforts in making this game a reality.”
