Wales Rugby League general manager Mark Jones is premiering his new film on November 30th at Cineworld in Cardiff.
In 2019, Mark was diagnosed with Myeloma—a rare form of blood cancer. Forced into isolation, away from his surfing obsession and his family, he began a virtual paddle around his Wales in order to raise money to tackle his disease. As he documented his progress online, his journey sent ripples of hope into a community suffering with their own issues and resulted in a wave of compassion that he rode towards remission and rediscovery.
Publishing books about his experience, his story has now been turned into a film made by Fine Rolling Media. A Black Tie Event on November 30th will incorporate a Red Carpet Reception at Cornerstone, Cardiff, a Cinema Premiere at Cineworld, Cardiff and Christmas party back at Cornerstone till midnight.
The film follows Mark as he navigates living with Myeloma. We see how it affects his family, his mental health, and—most importantly, his obsession with surfing. Through a series of challenges, including a ‘virtual paddle’ around Wales and running the London Marathon while on aggressive chemotherapy, our story tracks the ups and downs of a unique individual battling to come to terms with what it means to live with cancer.
Jones said: “Over the last five years, Rolling Media have been able to capture the best and worst moments of my life. With their unique storytelling approach they have created an emotional rollercoaster.
“The film not only highlights living with cancer, but also how sport can be used to strength mental health and wellbeing. I am looking forward to sharing my story on the big screen and then enjoying everyone’s company at the afterpParty.”
WRL chairman James Davies said: “I’d like to congratulate Mark and the production team on the premiere of his new film.
“Mark’s journey through his battle with his rare form of cancer has been well-documented through our channels and those who follow Mark on his social media channels.
“It will be wonderful to see it all in his own words on the big screen. Everyone at WRL wishes him a successful launch evening as well as good health in the future.”
