Wales had representation in the Rugby League Challenge Cup for the first time in 14 years when UWIC (a university in Cardiff) were invited to take place in the 1998-99 competition. They lost 24-4 at Barrow Island in Cumbria but after retaining the British Student Rugby League (BUSA) Championship in 1999, they were again offered a first round spot for 1999-2000.
