Torfaen top after Wheelchair league openers

Torfaen Tigers top the WRL Wheelchair Development League after the first round of matches at University of South Wales on Sunday afternoon.

The Pontypool-based side beat newcomers Swindon St George 56-6 in the second match of the double-header, which was enough to see them rise above North Wales Crusaders, who had beaten Cardiff Blue Dragons 54-10 in the earlier match.

The father and son combination at the Tigers, Jason And Jamie Reynolds, scored 34 of Torfaen’s points, with skipper Jason getting a hat-trick of tries and his son Jamie scoring five.

Jamie even converted one of his dad’s scores.

Torfaen were first over as a Scott Trigg-Turner try on five minutes gave them a 4-0 lead. That was the first of two he would score in the game. Jamie’s first try on 12 minutes doubled the advantage with Trigg-Turner adding the first of his five goals.

Alys Golden added the third Torfaen try before the Reynolds clan took over.

It took until the 55th minute for Swindon to get on the board, the match being an hour long, when Oliver Matthews scored under the sticks and Adam Davies converted.

Jamie Reynolds was the final try scorer picking up a long kick after the hooter to race in, but missing the kick.

Crusaders racked up 42 points in the first half alone against Cardiff.

They stormed into a perfect start when Mason Baker scored after just three minutes. Matthew Turner converted before adding the next three tries and goals to make the score 24-0 on 12 minutes.

It took another seven minutes for Crusaders to go over again, but when they did, it was a Fionn McCabe try and Turner goal that put the score onto 30-0.

Further tries came from Baker and Turner with Turner converting both to put the score onto 42-0 at the break.

Cardiff finally broke their duck two minutes into the second half when Libbie Sargent scored in the corner. Daniel Martin converted.

But parity was restored three minutes later when McCabe scored his second after Jess Booth made the metres. Turner converted.

Cardiff hit back with Sargent’s second try before Crusaders responding with a Mason Baker try and goal.
