Welsh internationals combined in the men’s Super League last weekend as Finley Yates created a try for Charlie Glover in Salford Red Devils’ loss to top of the table Hull Kingston Rovers. It was Glover’s first senior try in only his second appearance. In Super League Reserves, Sam Grice helped Castleford Tigers to an away win over a strong St Helens side. In the NRL, Sam Hughes and Harry Hayes were in the Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs side that lost at Wests Tigers.
In the RFL Championship, Caleb Aekins scored a try for Featherstone Rovers as they won away at Elliot Kear‘s Batley Bulldogs. London Broncos got their sixth win of the season in an attempt to move out of the bottom four, with Curtis Davies and Huw Worthington in the side who beat Barrow Raiders at home. Widnes Vikings, starring Mike Butt and Matty Fozard, had a crucial win at Billy Walkley‘s Sheffield Eagles to help their chances of staying out of the relegation play-offs. Gil Dudson‘s Oldham lost at top of the table York Knights.
North Wales Crusaders lost at home in League 1 for the first time this season, going down 24-12 to Swinton Lions. Paddy Jones and Ant Walker were in the Crusaders side. The Colwyn Bay side remain top and are still in pole position for the title having only lost twice this year, both to Swinton. Elsewhere, Dec Tomlinson scored a try for Dewsbury Rams as they won at Newcastle Thunder, whilst Max Clarke was in action for Workington Town in the win over Keighley Cougars.
Crusaders also had a rare defeat in the Wheelchair game, losing 40-28 to Hereford Harriers in what was another top of the table clash, this one in Championship West. Lee Sargent scored a hat-trick of tries for Hereford, whilst Gary Preece managed a solitary try, six conversions and two drop-goals. The Hereford team also featured Libbie Sargent and Richard Carver. In the Crusaders side were Jonathan Gill, Harry Jones, Martin Turner and Jakub Wasieczko with Gill being the only one of their Welsh international contingent not to score. Jones and Wasieczko each scored a try with Turner getting a try and three conversions.
In the Super League, Stuart Williams’ Edinburgh Giants were still on the hunt for their first victory of the season as they made to trip to Hull. A disallowed try for Williams wasn’t enough as his side fell 52-34. Jodie Boyd-Ward‘s pair of tries were not enough for Leeds Rhinos, as they lost 52-28 to London Roosters, inflicting the Rhinos with their first regular season defeat in nearly two years. Scott Trigg-Turner and Mark Williams featured for Wigan Warriors as they lost to Halifax Panthers. In the reserves fixture between two sides, Brogan Evans scored a try in Wigan’s 64-6 victory.
