Following the success of the Wales Wheelchair international side, a new Wheelchair Rugby League competition, the Wales Rugby League “Cwpan Sialans Cadair Olwyn” (Wheelchair Challenge Cup) will launch on Sunday May 22 at Wrexham’s Glyndwr Sports Centre.
Acting as a curtain-raiser to the 2022 Peacock Cup, North Wales Crusaders will take on Torfaen Tigers in the inaugural fixture, the two sides meeting for only the second ever time, with the winner to be named inaugural Cwpan Sialans champions.
Wales national coach and Wheelchair Development Officer, Stephen Jones, said: “The newly formed Wales Rugby League Cwpan Sialans Cadair Olwyn is a massive step forward in developing Wheelchair Rugby League in Wales.
“The inauguration games were due to be played between North Wales Crusaders, Torfaen Tigers and West Wales Raiders alongside this year’s Peacock Cup with the winning Welsh team crowned the 2022 winners.
“Unfortunately with West Wales withdrawal from the league and competition it will now see North Wales Crusaders take on Torfaen Tigers as a curtain-raiser.
“The vision of this competition is to encourage the growth of Welsh Wheelchair Rugby League and the benefits for the sport in Wales are enormous and will help strengthen each team which will help strengthen the Welsh team.
“Fingers crossed over the next couple of years we will see West Wales, Cardiff Blue Dragons and new Welsh clubs join in. This is the start of an exciting new chapter for Wheelchair Rugby League in Wales.”
