Wales Dragonhearts go back to the future

Wales Dragonhearts are going back 30 years with their kit for the end of season internationals, by replicating the strip that was worn by the “originals” back in 1994.

The first ever international match played by the side that was then known as “Wales Amateurs” was on March 27, 1994 when they took on England at Morfa Stadium in Swansea (pictured below).

The iconic strip was brought back for the 10th year and was used in the 2003 season, worn by players like Richard Hibbard (below) as they won the Community Four Nations for the second time in a row.

Richard HibbardNow it’s being revived for a second time for the Wales Dragonhearts side that will play in the autumn.

Dragonhearts head coach Simon Reynolds said: “We thought it would be a good idea to honour those that have worn the shirt over the past 30 years and hopefully we all can do it justice in this special year.

“We wanted to explore an iconic jersey as well as run some reunion events. Replica Jerseys will be available and personalised with newly WRL-approved heritage numbers.

“Wales Dragonhearts is a sponsored programme, we have to completely raise all the money ourselves to run, and would welcome the help of any businesses interested in being part of this special season.”
