This week, the National Lottery Dedicated To…campaign celebrates our grassroots sporting heroes for their community spirit during 2020.
Covid-19 may have changed the way we go about our lives but one thing remains the same: our clubs are the very heart of our communities.
And when it comes to commitment to rugby league and disability sport, one man stands out: Stephen Jones, Head Coach of the National Lottery supported Wheelchair Rugby League club, the North Wales Crusaders.
And despite the pandemic, Stephen has been working tirelessly behind the scenes to make the sure the Crusaders is stronger than ever.
Already, the club has been named “Club of the Year 2019” by the Rugby Football League, and then “Club of the Month” in March by Parasports UK. It is the only club in the world to have three teams playing in the same league system and of all the established clubs in the UK, it is the one that has seen the biggest growth in members.
But Stephen is certainly not content for the club to stand still and enjoy its success. During Covid, he has been working hard to set up new teams. It will be the first ever Welsh club to set up a Physical Disability Rugby League (PDRL) side which is a version of rugby league which allows non wheelchair users with disabilities to play the game.
Mental health too has been at the forefront of Stephen’s thinking. In fact, just before lockdown a number of coaches at the Crusaders underwent mental health training:
“We have organised get togethers over Zoom so we can check in on each other. 80% of our members have been shielding and many of our players have suffered life-altering injuries so it’s been important to keep talking and making each other laugh. Lots of people have been really struggling.”
Stephen may be retired but the work undertaken to take the club from strength to strength is the equivalent of a full-time job. He is also head coach of the Welsh international Wheelchair Rugby League squad.
Yet, Stephen has disabilities too. He is currently not a wheelchair user but suffers from Genetic Muscular Degenerative disease and has recently been diagnosed with Merrf syndrome which affects different parts of the body, particularly the muscles and nervous system.
But Stephen’s passion for the club and for offering opportunities to play rugby league is unstoppable. And he pays tribute to the contribution that the National Lottery has made:
“The National Lottery has had an enormous impact. It helped us get the club up and running in 2013. Each of our sport wheelchairs cost £1500 and we have 40 of them now which have been funded by the National Lottery.
“And this year, the National Lottery money we have received through the Sport Wales Be Active Wales grant means that the club will still be here next year. We had no funds coming in but we still had to pay out for insurances and storage so the grant came as very welcome news!”
With the help of National Lottery funding, thousands of grassroots sports workers and volunteers from local clubs and organisations across the UK, have been be able to continue to help the nation to remain active, happy and motivated during the Covid-19 pandemic.
Thanks to National Lottery players, £30 million is raised every week for good causes, many of which are supporting the most vulnerable in our communities across the UK during the Coronavirus crisis.

Yr wythnos yma, mae ymgyrch Ymrwymiad I… y Loteri Genedlaethol yn dathlu ein harwyr chwaraeon ar lawr gwlad am eu hysbryd cymunedol yn ystod 2020.
Efallai bod Covid-19 wedi newid y ffordd rydyn ni’n byw ein bywydau ond mae un peth yn aros yr un fath: ein clybiau ni yw calon ein cymunedau.
A phan ddaw’n fater o ymrwymiad i rygbi’r gynghrair a chwaraeon anabledd, mae un dyn yn amlwg iawn: Stephen Jones, Prif Hyfforddwr clwb rygbi’r gynghrair cadair olwyn sydd wedi cael cefnogaeth gan y Loteri Genedlaethol, Crusaders Gogledd Cymru.
Ac er gwaetha’r pandemig, mae Stephen wedi bod yn gweithio’n ddiflino y tu ôl i’r llenni i wneud yn siŵr bod y Crusaders yn gryfach nag erioed.
Eisoes, mae’r clwb wedi cael ei enwi’n Glwb y Flwyddyn 2019 gan y Gynghrair Rygbi a Phêl Droed a hefyd Clwb y Mis ym mis Mawrth gan Parasports UK. Dyma’r unig glwb yn y byd i fod â thri thîm yn chwarae yn yr un system cynghrair ac o’r holl glybiau sydd wedi’u sefydlu yn y DU, dyma’r un sydd wedi gweld y twf mwyaf mewn aelodau.
Ond nid yw Stephen yn fodlon i’r clwb sefyll yn ei unfan a jyst mwynhau ei lwyddiant. Yn ystod Covid, mae wedi bod yn gweithio’n galed i sefydlu timau newydd. Hwn fydd y clwb cyntaf erioed i sefydlu tîm Rygbi’r Gynghrair Anabledd Corfforol (PDRL) sy’n fersiwn o rygbi’r gynghrair sy’n caniatáu i ddefnyddwyr ag anableddau nad ydynt yn defnyddio cadair olwyn chwarae’r gêm.
Mae iechyd meddwl wedi cael lle blaenllaw gan Stephen hefyd. Yn wir, ychydig cyn y cyfyngiadau symud, cafodd nifer o hyfforddwyr y Crusaders hyfforddiant iechyd meddwl:
“Rydyn ni wedi trefnu i gyfarfod ar Zoom er mwyn i ni allu cadw mewn cysylltiad a gwneud yn siŵr bod pawb yn iawn. Mae 80% o’n haelodau ni wedi bod yn gwarchod eu hunain ac mae llawer o’n chwaraewyr ni wedi dioddef anafiadau sy’n newid eu bywyd, felly mae wedi bod yn bwysig dal i siarad a gwneud i’n gilydd chwerthin. Mae llawer o bobl wedi bod yn ei chael hi’n anodd iawn.”
Efallai bod Stephen wedi ymddeol ond mae’r gwaith mae’n ei wneud i fynd â’r clwb o nerth i nerth yn cyfateb i swydd lawn amser. Mae hefyd yn brif hyfforddwr carfan Rygbi’r Gynghrair Cadair Olwyn ryngwladol Cymru.
Ac eto, mae gan Stephen anableddau hefyd. Ar hyn o bryd nid yw’n ddefnyddiwr cadair olwyn ond mae’n dioddef o glefyd Dirywiol Cyhyrol Genetig ac yn ddiweddar mae wedi cael diagnosis o syndrom Merrf, sy’n effeithio ar wahanol rannau o’r corff, yn enwedig y cyhyrau a’r system nerfol.
Ond mae angerdd Stephen dros y clwb a thros gynnig cyfleoedd i chwarae rygbi’r gynghrair yn ddiwyro. Ac mae’n talu teyrnged i’r cyfraniad mae’r Loteri Genedlaethol wedi’i wneud:
“Mae’r Loteri Genedlaethol wedi cael effaith enfawr. Fe wnaeth ein helpu ni i sefydlu’r clwb yn 2013. Mae pob un o’n cadeiriau olwyn chwaraeon yn costio £1500
ac mae gennym ni 40 ohonyn nhw bellach, sydd wedi’u hariannu gan y Loteri Genedlaethol.
“Ac eleni, mae arian y Loteri Genedlaethol rydyn ni wedi’i gael drwy grant Cronfa Cymru Actif Chwaraeon Cymru yn golygu y bydd y clwb yma o hyd y flwyddyn nesaf. Doedd gennym ni ddim arian yn dod i mewn ond roedd rhaid i ni dalu am yswiriant a storio yr un fath, felly roedd y grant yn newyddion i’w groesawu’n fawr!”
Gyda help arian y Loteri Genedlaethol, mae miloedd o weithwyr chwaraeon ar lawr gwlad a gwirfoddolwyr mewn clybiau a sefydliadau lleol ledled y DU wedi gallu dal ati i helpu’r genedl i gadw’n actif, yn hapus ac yn llawn cymhelliant yn ystod pandemig Covid-19.
Diolch i chwaraewyr y Loteri Genedlaethol, mae £30 miliwn yn cael ei godi bob wythnos ar gyfer achosion da. Mae llawer o’r arian yma’n cefnogi’r bobl fwyaf agored i niwed yn ein cymunedau ni ledled y DU yn ystod argyfwng y Coronafeirws.
